NISD Solar Cars Program

Volunteer opportunity with NISD for the Solar Car Program. It's a 10 week program, comprised of 65 schools with over 900 students, that runs February – April. The school seeks volunteers to spend one hour per week at the school helping students plan, design, assemble, and test a solar car to race at the area-wide race in April. They also seek volunteers to help on race day.

The Habitat for Humanity general construction day went great! We had a total of 6 volunteers that helped the entire day from 8am to 3:45pm and did a great job finishing a roof on one of the houses!! the roof had barely been started before last Saturday and we got after it with a group from the Americorps out of Denver and finished it off! And I must say, our roof looked much better than the group next door who rushed through theirs. Big thank you to Brett Larson, Allison Guettner, Lauren Maneau, Krystel Lozares, and Arin Barkataki for all of your help!

Outreach has the following events coming up and will need volunteers for each of them:

  • East Central High School Career/Job Fair- Thursday, February 14th from 8:00am to 3:15pm
    • Help promote the field of engineering as a possible career field to graduating seniors about to head out into the real world and college. Approximately 650 seniors will be attending the career fair.
    • 2 to 3 volunteers needed for half the day each. Contact me if you are available for either the morning or afternoon shifts.
  • SA Childrens Museum Engineer Day- Saturday, February 16th from noon to 4:00pm
    • Conduct various engineering activities with kids from all over the city.
    • 5 volunteers needed for afternoon
  • Habitat for Humanity- Saturday, April 13th from 8:00am to 3:30pm
    • We will be helping raise the framing for the walls of the house!! Should be a very fun day seeing a house go from a flat slab on the ground to a vertical structure!!
    • As many volunteers as we can get are needed!!

If anyone has any questions or would like to volunteer, they can e-mail me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Thank you!
