The State of Texas’s Infrastructure

Civil Engineers Assign Texas Infrastructure a C-

Unfortunately traffic congestion, stressed drinking water systems, overloaded wastewater treatment plants, and flooding events are all too common experiences. The Texas Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) today released its 2008 Texas Infrastructure Report Card Update, which assigned the state’s infrastructure a cumulative grade of C- in 13 infrastructure areas – roads and highways, bridges, transit, aviation, schools, drinking water, wastewater, dams, solid waste, hazardous waste, navigable waterways, flood control and energy.

Mr. Bourque has been practicing civil engineering for 32 years after earning a bachelor’s degree in 1977 from Texas A&M University. His practice has been mainly in the East Texas area in a wide range of civil fields. He has been active at the Texas Section ASCE level since the early 1980’s. He is currently a vice president with Schaumburg & Polk, Inc..

WHY ASCE?

In 1852 The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) was established to become global leaders in building a better quality of life. ASCE continues this goal with the advancement of science and profession of engineering to enhance the welfare of humanity. ASCE's basic goal set is comprised of:

  • Develop Leadership

  • Advance Technology

  • Advocate Life Long Learning

  • Promote the Profession

ASCE provides a pathway for bulding leadership skills, exchanging ideas, and creating lifelong professional relationships.

Perhaps one of the most important services the organization provides is key contacts with state and federal representatives. It is important to let law makers know what challenges are facing our country and provide them with the most complete information on the needs facing our infrastructure. Younger Members (35 & under) help young engineers to grow personally and professionally by taking advantage of diverse programs and opportunities provided to them through ASCE.

Continuing Education Credits and Personal Development Hours are offered throughout the year to fulfill  local requirements for licensure. Hundreds of seminars, workshops, webinars & conferences occur each year which satisfy these credits and help sharpen your skills as an engineer.

ASCE also provides many opportunities to become involved with local activities and programs. These programs can be found on our website or you can click here to "Get Involved."
